I rode out to the Terracotta Army before breakfast, rushed through three pits and a museum, ate standing at a counter in the Muslim Quarter, and flew home convinced I had seen the city. I hadn’t, and I knew it the moment the plane left the ground. So on my second visit I booked five nights and did the opposite: one major sight per day, unhurried meals, and afternoons spent doing nothing more ambitious than watching the light move across the city wall. Xi’an rewards that kind of patience — it’s a city you read slowly, the way you’d read a thick novel, not one you skim.

This is the route I settled into, written for someone who wants all the famous names — the warriors, the wall, the pagodas — without the clipboard schedule that usually comes with them. Five days lets you stack each day smartly: one big morning, a loose afternoon, an evening that is mostly about eating. It also matters that Xi’an’s best show doesn’t start until after dark. Datang Everbright City glows, the Drum Tower lights up, the Muslim Quarter lanes steam — so a plan that ends at five in the afternoon is missing half of what the city is selling.

Day 1: Settle in and take the wall slowly

Drop your bags and make your first stop 永宁门, the South Gate. A city wall ticket runs about ¥54, and the Yongningmen entrance is the busiest, so time it for mid-afternoon rather than the morning rush. If your legs are willing, rent a bike — about ¥45 for two hours, plus a deposit — and ride the full 13.7 km circuit, watching the old city fall away on one side and the towers of the new one rise on the other. If not, walk the stretch between the South and West gates and come back at sunset, when the light goes amber along the crenellations and the watchtowers cast long shadows over the rooftops.

Have dinner near the Bell Tower, five minutes on foot from the gate, and catch the tower lit up on your way back down to metro Line 2, which runs directly beneath it. It is a gentle first day by design: the point of this route is that you never again feel the need to run.

Day 2: The Terracotta Army, done properly

Give the warriors a full morning — the ticket is about ¥120 and the site opens around 08:30, so arrive at opening and make straight for Pit 1, because by ten the rail is three rows deep. Stand at the front and let the scale hit you: thousands of individual figures ranked in battle formation, each face different, each waiting out the same two thousand years. Then loop through Pit 2 and Pit 3 for the detail — kneeling archers, a general with his hands clasped, bronze chariots in the on-site museum. Give yourself three hours, and don’t feel guilty about the ones you’ll spend just standing there.

On the way back, stop at 华清宫 (Huaqing Palace, about ¥120) if the sky is clear; the hot springs and the wooded Lishan slope are a gentle hour or two, and the crowds thin out there while the warriors’ coaches queue. The Y5 tourist bus from Xi’an Railway Station runs the whole route for about ¥10 each way.

Day 3: Museums, a pagoda, and a street that glows

Start at the Shaanxi History Museum. Entry is free but requires a reservation made days in advance on the official WeChat account — treat that booking like a flight ticket. It opens 09:00 and closes Mondays. The Han and Tang galleries alone justify the trip: gilded bronze, tri-color glazed horses, murals lifted from Tang tombs. In the afternoon, cross town to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔); the climb costs about ¥25 and the view from the top over the old city is the best in Xi’an. Stay for the evening. The north-square fountain show starts around 20:30 in summer, and Datang Everbright City, the Tang-style pedestrian street running south from the pagoda, is free to wander and only truly alive after the lights come on.

Day 4: Pick your day out of town

With five days you earn one excursion. The classic is Mount Huashan, an hour from Xi’an North Station by high-speed rail (about ¥55); it’s a long day, so take the West Peak cable car up and the North Peak one down and let the mountain do the vertical work. The calmer alternative is 法门寺 (Famen Temple) to the southwest, about two hours by road — its pagoda holds a finger-bone relic of the Buddha and a treasure gallery that reads like a museum in its own right. And if you’d rather not leave town, ride Line 3 east to Qujiang, spend the afternoon in Tang Paradise, and come back along the waterfront as it lights up. Any of the three fills the day without emptying you.

Day 5: The Muslim Quarter on a full stomach

Save the food lanes for your last morning. Skip the first stretch of 回民街 — a tourist conveyor belt of identical skewer stalls — and walk two lanes over to 洒金桥 and 大皮院, where the queues are local and the menus are nailed to the wall in one language. Biangbiang noodles about ¥20, a 腊汁肉夹馍 about ¥12, persimmon cakes a few yuan. Eat standing, eat often, and buy your souvenirs here rather than at the airport. Finish with one slow lap of the Drum Tower square, and let Xi’an send you off the way it welcomed you: loudly, and from the kitchen.

Practical details

City Wall: about ¥54, roughly 08:00–22:00 in summer; bikes about ¥45 per two hours.

Terracotta Army: about ¥120, 08:30–18:00 (closes earlier in winter).

Huaqing Palace: about ¥120, roughly 08:00–18:00.

Shaanxi History Museum: free, reservation required, closed Mondays, 09:00–17:30.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda: ground level free; climbing the tower about ¥25.

Metro: single rides about ¥2–7; Alipay or WeChat QR codes scan at the gates.

Tips

Book the Shaanxi History Museum reservation the moment you confirm your dates; weekend slots vanish days ahead.

Order your days so the warriors come first, the wall at sunset, and Datang Everbright City after dark.
