The city fixed me within ten minutes. The tower had just switched on its lights, gold against a bruised-purple sky, and the whole square carried the hum of a place waking up for its best shift. I sat on the steps with a cup of \u9178\u6885\u6c64 from a cart and decided that night is Xi&#8217;an&#8217;s true daylight. Climbing it costs about \u00a530 (about \u00a550 with the Drum Tower a few minutes&#8217; walk away), and the view down the four main avenues at lighting-up time is worth the stairs. The towers switch on around sunset \u2014 roughly 20:00 in summer, 19:00 in winter \u2014 and stay lit until late. The square between them is where families, skaters and vendors do their evening rounds; no ticket needed, and the people-watching is free.<\/p>\n<p>The Drum Tower, a few hundred metres west, beats out drum performances on the hour through the evening \u2014 time a climb to catch one. Between the two towers, the lanes into the Muslim Quarter start filling with carts; follow the smell of grilled flatbread.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Muslim_Quarter_After_Dark\"><\/span>The Muslim Quarter After Dark<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u56de\u6c11\u8857 does its best work after the day-trippers thin out, from about 21:00. The smoke gets thicker, the skewers come off the coals faster, and the lanes off the main drag \u2014 \u5927\u76ae\u9662, \u6d12\u91d1\u6865 \u2014 turn into the version locals actually use. Lamb skewers run about \u00a53\u20135 each; a \u67ff\u5b50\u997c costs \u00a54; and the \u704c\u6c64\u5305 at \u8d3e\u4e09\u704c\u6c64\u5305 holds up at 22:00 as well as it does at noon. Eat late here and you&#8217;ll understand why the city sleeps in.<\/p>\n<p>The main drag, \u5317\u9662\u95e8, is the touristed spine, but by 22:00 even it relaxes: the \u67ff\u5b50\u997c carts keep frying, the \u7511\u7cd5 wagons sell off their last scoops, and the \u9178\u6885\u6c64 stands switch from plastic cups to proper glasses.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/xiancitytravel.com\/picture\/food\/Spiced-Skewers.webp\" alt=\"Lamb skewers grilling over charcoal at a Xi'an night stall\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Datang_Everbright_City_A_Street_That_Dresses_as_a_Dynasty\"><\/span>Datang Everbright City: A Street That Dresses as a Dynasty<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>About two kilometres of Tang-era buildings, lanterns and neon run south from Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It&#8217;s free, it stays lively until around 23:00, and it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/xiancitytravel.com\/article\/travel-diaries\/xian-photo-route.html\">the most photographed street in Xi&#8217;an<\/a> for good reason \u2014 the buildings are lit like a stage set and the crowds treat it like one. Street performers work its length; the &#8220;unfalling lady&#8221; balancing on a hidden wheel draws the biggest ring of phones. Get there by Line 3 (Dayanta station) or Line 4, and start from the north, at the pagoda&#8217;s fountain square. The fountains run evening shows roughly every two hours from 19:00, with the 21:00 performance the busiest \u2014 check the day&#8217;s schedule before you go.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/xiancitytravel.com\/picture\/modern\/Datang-Everbright-City.webp\" alt=\"Tang-style buildings glowing with lanterns along Datang Everbright City at night\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_City_Wall_After_Dark\"><\/span>The City Wall After Dark<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By day the wall is a tourist circuit; by night it turns into something calmer and stranger. Enter at Yongning Gate (South Gate), pay about \u00a554, and rent a bike (about \u00a545 for three hours). The southern and western sections, facing the modern skyline, are best after sunset, when the corner towers glow and the traffic below becomes ribbons of light. The wall stays open until 22:00 in summer \u2014 ride before 21:30 so you have time to return the bike. The watchtowers stay lit long after, and the view back toward the Bell Tower from the south wall is one of the city&#8217;s best <a href=\"https:\/\/xiancitytravel.com\/article\/travel-diaries\/xian-2-day-photo-route.html\">night photographs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/xiancitytravel.com\/picture\/citywall\/Night-Tour.webp\" alt=\"The Xi'an city wall lit with lanterns after sunset\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Night_Markets_Beyond_the_Quarter\"><\/span>Night Markets Beyond the Quarter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If the Muslim Quarter feels too much like a stage, Xi&#8217;an runs a second show. \u4e1c\u65b0\u8857, north of \u65b0\u57ce\u5e7f\u573a, is the old <a href=\"https:\/\/xiancitytravel.com\/article\/travel-diaries\/xian-foodie-2-days.html\">night-food street<\/a> \u2014 stalls and low tables that only get going after 22:00, serving \u70e4\u8089 skewers and \u7092\u9762 for about \u00a525 a plate until the small hours. \u6c38\u5174\u574a by Zhongshan Gate, the walled snack park, stays lit with \u6454\u7897\u9152 performances and \u5b50\u957f\u714e\u997c. And if the weather turns, the hotpot chains around \u5c0f\u5be8 and \u5927\u96c1\u5854 take walk-ins until midnight \u2014 order the \u9e33\u9e2f\u9505 and let the night sort itself out.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_You_Want_a_Show\"><\/span>If You Want a Show<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The big one is \u957f\u6068\u6b4c (Song of Everlasting Sorrow), staged on the lake at Huaqing Palace about 40 minutes east of town \u2014 a seventy-minute outdoor production with flames, a full lake stage and a thousand dancers, tickets from about \u00a5250 and climbing steeply with the seat. Book ahead; it sells out on summer evenings. Closer in, \u5927\u5510\u8299\u84c9\u56ed (Tang Paradise) runs its own night show for about \u00a5120, and the \u9752\u66f2\u793e crosstalk club near the Drum Tower packs in loud \u76f8\u58f0 nights for about \u00a5100\u2013200 \u2014 mostly Mandarin, but the energy survives translation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/xiancitytravel.com\/picture\/history\/changhenge.webp\" alt=\"The Song of Everlasting Sorrow open-air show on the lake stage at Huaqing Palace\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practical_Notes\"><\/span>Practical Notes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Metro Lines 2, 3 and 4 run until about 23:30; after that, taxis cluster around Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter gates \u2014 hail on a main avenue, not a side lane.<\/li>\n<li>Most of this route is free \u2014 budget for food and transport only.<\/li>\n<li>Summer nights stay warm until midnight; winter needs a heavy coat, and the wall is windier than the streets below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tips\"><\/span>Tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Start at the towers at dusk and end at Datang Everbright City \u2014 the lights get better the later it gets.<\/li>\n<li>Watch the fountain show from the north side of the square, not the middle, and you&#8217;ll see the whole arch.<\/li>\n<li>\u56de\u6c11\u8857 at 22:00 is calmer and better than at 19:00; don&#8217;t rush the night.<\/li>\n<li>Carry a thin jacket even in July \u2014 the wall wind and fountain spray cut through summer shirts.<\/li>\n<li>Photographers: take the Drum Tower from the west, framed by the tiled roofs of the Muslim Quarter, in the last blue hour of dusk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Waiting for the last train back at Bell Tower station, a security guard glanced at the photos on my phone and nodded. &#8220;\u591c\u897f\u5b89\u597d\u770b\u5427,&#8221; he said \u2014 Xi&#8217;an looks good at night, doesn&#8217;t it? He was right.
